Benjamin Dooley clocked his target instantly.
It had been a long time since the deputy had stopped into the Oasis Bar for a drink or to hang out with the regulars. In his younger days, Dooley never met an alcoholic beverage he couldnât down with the best of them. It started with beer but didnât take long to graduate to the hard stuff. He started to notice a disturbing pattern when he found himself tossing back multiple drinks every night after work. When he started his day with a couple to take the edge off, he decided it was time to cut back. It wasnât easy, but he found a way to do it.
These days, a drink was something that happened on the rarest of occasions, mostly relegated to lite beer. Surprisingly, cutting out the booze turned out to be easier than cigarettes, which he couldnât quite walk away from.
Dooley had gone to high school with the owner, Charles Stamp. Back then, everyone called him âChipâ and a few of them, like Dooley, still did. Chip had been standing outside when he pulled in, so they spent a few minutes catching up and sharing a smoke. By the time the deputy was ready to head inside, he promised to call Chip the next week to meet up for lunch.
The inside of the Oasis looked pretty much the same as it had the first time he walked through the doors a little over twenty years earlier. Chip hadnât owned it then, but when he bought the place after the original owner retired, he decided to keep the same aesthetic for the bar. It was a but tacky, but in a good way. The place was small, housed in a retrofitted one pump gas station that had operated and closed long before Dooley had been born. A few businesses had attempted to make a go there, but the bar was the only one to thrive. Strings of colored lights hung from the ceiling as did LED tiki torches, fake palm trees, and other assorted decorations and tchotchkes that tied into the Oasis feel. They even had a sand volleyball court out back, though it was rarely used these days.
Since he was there on business in an official unofficial capacity, he tried to blend in. The last thing he wanted was to draw attention which is why he was dressed in a faded pair of old jeans and an unbuttoned flannel shirt over a T-shirt with ARMY printed across it, a reminder of another life. It was doubtful there were too many regulars who didnât know who he was or what he did for a living, but the sheriff wanted to keep their current mystery quiet until they had to spread the word. While he was investigating a lead, Dooley was at the Oasis to look into another.
Dooley clocked his target instantly.
His name was Shaw, a petty criminal who proved to be more of a nuisance than actual threat to the people of Sommersville. Despite his penchant for doing stupid stuff, Dooley liked the guy.
